Blandford Colour Series

The Blandford Colour Series covers a wide range of subjects, from vehicles to butterflies. In 1966 two titles were added covering contemporary Fighters and Bombers under the collective title 'The Pocket Encyclopaedia of World Aircraft in Colour'. Each volume covered eighty aircraft types, illustrated with detailed colour drawings showing a side view and a split-plan view. The latter comprised a left-hand side viewed from above and a right-hand side viewed from below. A concise set of technical data was presented below the drawing. In a separate section, an accompanying text was keyed to the drawing and described each aeroplane's development and service career.

The first two titles were very successful and further titles covering civil airliners, private aircraft and helicopters were soon added. Subsequently, additional titles covering WW1, Inter-war, WW2 and other specialised aircraft were also added. In 1971 the original two titles were revised to only cover aircraft used from 1960 onwards. At this time, the original white covers were replaced by a new 'colour band' design, which was also applied to reprints of the other titles.

All of these attractive and very useful books have gone through numerous reprints and overseas editions. In the USA, all the titles were originally re-published by Macmillan as the 'Macmillan Color Series'. The series continues to be so popular that in 2004 a further reprint of selected titles under redesigned covers was made by Weidenfeld & Nicholson. Combined editions of the World War Two Aircraft and Airliners titles are also available.
