Famous Airplanes of the World
[first series]

The first (blue covers) series of Famous Airplanes of the World was published between 1969 and 1986. It comprises a series of highly illustrated monographs on various aircraft types. Each edition provides a 8-page narrative development history of the type (and sub-types) and technical data tables. Also included is a 8-page chapter on the types' operational/service use and a description of the camouflage and markings worn (with tone profile drawings). The text is entirely in Japanese, except for English chapter headings. Most of the content comprises b+w photographs (usually reproduced full page or half-page), scale line drawings, cut-away drawings, cockpit diagrams, close-up detail drawings and colour profiles or colour photos.

Initially each edition had 58 pages, but from issue 50(?) onwards this was increased to 66 pages, and from issue 120(?) to 72 pages. The page size remained the same throughout the series. The photos and drawings were printed on glossy paper, but issues before number 120 used cheaper quality paper for the narrative chapters. Around issue 110 the cover changed from landscape to portrait format, with a "checkered" background, (the contents has always been portrait). From issue 117 the series changed from monthly to bi-monthly publication.

Several subjects are covered more than once. Usually the newer edition has been updated and contains partly, or completely, new photographs and new colour artwork. After issue 156 the series started again at number 1, with a new black style cover (see separate listing).
