The Country
Geography
Bosnia and Herzegovina is situated in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. It is bordered by Croatia to the north and west, Serbia to the east and Montenegro to the south east. There is a short coastal strip on the Adriatic Sea, only a few miles long.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is a mountainous country, with the Dinaric Alps running along the western border with Croatia and further mountain ranges inland which extend to the Serbian border. In contrast, the northern border with Croatia is relatively low-lying and fertile. The total land area is 51,130 sq km (19,741 sq miles).
The Population of 4 million (2000 figure) comprises 44% of ethnic Bosnian origin, 31% Serbian, 17% Croat and 8% other ethnic groups. Some 40% of the people are Muslim, 31% Serbian Orthodox, 15% Roman Catholic, 4% Protestant and 10% other faiths. The capital city is Sarajevo.
Following the 1992-1995 War, the Bosnian state was partitioned into two separate autonomous regions, a Moslem/Croat dominated region called the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a Serb dominated region called the Republike Srpska.
