The Country

Geography

Located on the northern coast of Europe, at the entrance to the Baltic Sea, Denmark occupies the greater part of the Jutland peninsula; two large islands called Fyn (Fünnen) and Själland (Zealand) and 483 smaller islands. Denmark’s only landward neighbour is German, to the south. To the west and north lies the North Sea, while to the east are the straits called the Kattegat and Öresund, which separate Denmark from Sweden. In the North Atlantic are the self-governing territories of Greenland and the Faeroe Islands.
The land is quite low lying, with an average height above sea level of only 30 m (98 ft), and has no large rivers and few lakes. The coastline is, however, indented by many lagoons and fjords. The total land area is 43,070 sq km (16,629 sq miles).
The Population of 5.3 million (2000 figure) comprises 96% of Danish origin, with 1% Faeroe and Inuit and 3% other ethnic groups – mainly Scandinavians and Europeans. Some 89% of the people are Evangelical Lutherans, 1% Roman Catholic and 10% other faiths. The capital city is Copenhagen, on the island of Själland.
