Abu Dhabi is one of the emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates. It is located in the south of the country, and has borders with Saudi Arabia to the south and west, Oman to the east, Dubai to the north east and the Persian Gulf to the north.
About 93% of the land area is desert or arid land, with only 5% of the land considered ‘green’. Only 30% of the emirate is inhabited. The coastal region includes dozens of small islands – mostly small and uninhabited. The emirate has a land area of 67,340 sq km (26,000 sq miles), making it the largest emirate.
The population was 921,000 million in 2013, making it the second most populous of the emirates. About 25.6% of the population are UAE nationals, and 74.4% expatriates. The city itself lies on the Persian Gulf coast. The oasis city of Al Ain lies close to the border with Oman.
