The Country

Armenia is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, where Western Asia and Eastern Europe meet. It is bordered by Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, Iran and the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave to the south and Turkey to the west.

The terrain of Armenia is mostly mountainous. The Lesser Caucasus mountain range occupies much of northern Armenia, and runs south east along the border with Azerbaijan until it crosses into Iran. This region is marked by serious earthquakes. The south west of the country is taken up with the relatively flat Armenian Plateau, where most of the population lives. The southern part of the plateaus slopes down to the Araks River, which defines the border with Turkey. In the west of the plateau is Mount Aragats, a single volcanic mountain which rises to 4,430 m (14,534 ft). In the east of the plateau is Lake Sevan, one of the largest high-altitude fresh-water lakes in the world. The land area is 29,743 square kilometres (11,484 square miles).

The country has a population of 3.26 million (2010 figures). The population is made up of 97.9% Armenian, 1.3% Yazidi, 0.5% Russian and 0.3% others. In terms of religion, 93% of the population is Armenian Orthodox, 2% other Christian, 1% Yazidism and 4% other. The capital is Yerevan.
