The Country

Geography

Barbados is an island nation in the western North Atlantic, just outside of the Caribbean Sea. Its nearest neighbours are Saint Lucia to the north west, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the west, Grenada to the south west and Trinidad and Tobago to the far south west.

The terrain of Barbados is made up of limestone and coral. The land is quite flat relative to neighboring islands. A range of low hills lines the eastern coastline, with more extensive hill ranges in the Scotland District, in the north east of the island. The highest of these rises to 340 m (1,120 ft).

Barbados has a total land area of 431 sq km (186 sq miles) and had a population of 274,000 in 2010. The main ethnic groups are Afro-Caribbean 93%, White 3.2%, Mixed race 2.6%, East Indian 1% and others 0.2%. The capital city is Bridgetown.
