Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It is bordered by Russia to the east, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the south west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the north west.
The terrain of Belarus is relatively flat, with the highest point in the country only reaching 345 m (1,132 ft). Northern Belarus has a hilly landscape with many lakes and gently sloping ridge lines. In the south east lies a low-lying swampy plain around the Pripiac River. Some 40% of the country is covered by forests, while the county’s numerous streams and lakes are a notable feature of the landscape. The land area is 207,595 square kilometres (80,155 square miles).
The country has a population of 9.46 million (2012 figures). The population is made up of 83.7% Belorusian, 8.3% Russian, 3.1% Polish, 1.7% Ukrainians and 3.2% others. In terms of religion, 48.3% of the population is Orthodox Christian, 41.1% no religion, 7.1% Catholic and 3.5% other. The capital is Minsk.
