To the east in the Caribbean Sea, the second-longest barrier reef in the world flanks much of the 386 kilometers of predominantly marshy coastline. It is located between 87° to 89° western geographic longitude and 16° to 18° northern geographic latitude and has an area of 22,973 square kilometres (8,870 square miles). The latitude and longitude of the capital, Belmopán, are about 88°48′ W and 16°18′ N.
