The fertile plateau and valley of the eastern range are the most densely populated parts of the country. The country is located between 66° to 79° western geographic longitude and 12° northern latitude 4° southern geographic latitude and has an area of 1,138.910 square kilometres (439.736 square miles). The latitude and longitude of the capital Bogotá are about 74°05′ W and 4°36′ N.
