The Country

Geography

Dominica is an island nation in the eastern Caribbean Sea. Its nearest neighbours are Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south.

The terrain of Dominica is very rugged and mountainous, due to its volcanic origins. The highest point, Mome Diablotins, reaches 1,447 m (4,747 ft). The mountain sides are covered in unspoilt tropical rain forest. The very high annual rainfall results in many waterfalls, springs and rivers.

Dominica has a total land area of 750 sq km (290 sq miles) and had a population of 71,300 in 2011. The main ethnic groups are Black 86.8%, Mixed race 8.9%, Kalinago 2.9%, European 0.8% and others 0.7%. The capital city is Roseau.
