Dubai is one of the emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates. It is located in the north of the country, in between Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
The land around Dubai is characterised by fine white sandy desert, while much of the rest of the UAE is gravel desert. The emirate has a land area of 4,114 sq km (1,588 sq miles), second only to Abu Dhabi. The population was 2.1 million in 2013, making it the most populous of the emirates. Some 17% of the population are UAE nationals, 51% Indian, 16% Pakistani, 9% Bangladeshi, 3% Filipinos and 4% others. The city itself lies on the Persian Gulf coast.
