One of the most northerly countries in the world, Finland is located in the northern part of Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by Norway, to the west by Sweden and to the east by Russia. The southern and south-western coasts face the Baltic Sea. The northern quarter of the country is inside the Arctic Circle.
The land consists mainly of a low-lying plateau formed by ancient glaciers and is pockmarked by thousands of relatively shallow lakes. In the south these lakes take up almost 20% of the land area.
