The Country

Geography

Georgia is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, where Western Asia and Eastern Europe meet. The country has borders with Russia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, Armenia to the south east, Turkey to the south west and the Black Sea to the west.

The terrain of Georgia is very mountainous. In the north, the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range forms the border with Russia. Peaks here can rise to more than 5,000 m (16,400 ft). The southern border is characterised by the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, part of which is volcanic and still subject to significant earthquakes. These two mountain ranges are connected north-south by the Likhi Mountains, which divide the country into western and eastern halves. The land area is 69,700 square kilometres (26,911 square miles).

The country has a population of 4.6 million (2013 figures). The population is made up of 83.8% Georgian, 6.5% Azeri, 5.7% Armenian 1.5% Russian and and 2.5% others. In terms of religion, 83.9% of the population is Orthodox Christian, 3.9% Armenian Christian, 9.9% Moslem and 0.8% Roman Catholic. The capital is Tbilisi.
