The Country

Geography

Located in Southeast Asia, Japan is an island state in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of East Asia. The country is an an archipelago of 6,852 islands, running roughly parallel to the mainland coast. The main islands, north to south, are Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku and Kyu-shu. Further south are the Ryukyu Islands, which include Okinamwa. Japan has maritime borders across the Sea of Japan with Russia, North Korea and South Korea, and across the East China Sea with China and Taiwan.

The islands of Japan were originally formed volcanically, and 108 volcanes are still active. Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan is 3,776 m (12,389 ft) high and still an active volcano. Some 73% of the land area is heavily forested or mountainous, so much of the population resides in the coastal regions.

Japan has a total land area of 377,944 sq km (145,925 sq miles) and had a population of 128.06 million in 2010. The main ethnic groups are Japanese 98.5%, Korean 0.5%, Chinese 0.4% and others 0.6%. The capital city is Tokyo on Honshu Island.
