The Country


Kazakhstan is a country in Central Asia. It is the world’s largest landlocked country. Kazakhstan has borders with Russia to the north, China to the east, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan to the south, and the Caspian Sea to the west.

The terrain of Kazakhstan is largely flat except for the Tian Shan Mountains along the border with Kyrgyzstan. The rest of the country is either semi-desert or desert. Only some 9% of the land is prairie or forest. In the south east are a number of lakes, the largest of which is Lake Balkhash. In the east, large portions of the Aral Sea and Caspian Sea lie with the borders of Kazakhstan. The land area is 2,724,900 square kilometres (1,052,085 square miles).

The country has a population of 16.97 million (2013 figures). The population is made up of 63.1% Kazakh, 23.6% Russian, 2.8% Uzbek 2.9% Ukrainian, 1.4% Uyghur, 1.3% Tartar, 1.5% German and 4.3% others. In terms of religion, 70% of the population is Moslem, 26.6% Christian, 0.1% Buddhist and 3.5% others. The capital is Astana.
