The Country
Geography
Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. Kazakhstan has borders with Kazakhstan to the north, China to the east, Tajikistan to the south, and Uzbekisan to the west.
Kyrgyzstan is a very mountainouse coubtry, with the Tian Shan mountains covering more than 80% of land area. The highest peak is located on the Chinese border and reaches 7,439 m (24,406 ft). Issy-Kul Lake in the east of the country is the second largest mountain lake in the world, after Titicaca. The remainder of the country is composed of valleys and basins. Less than 8% of the land is cultivated, and most of this is concentrated in the northern lowlands around the capital, Bishkek. The land area is 199,900 square kilometres (77,181 square miles).
The country has a population of 5.55 million (2010 figures). The population is made up of 69% Kyrgyz, 9% Russian, 14.5% Uzbek 1.9% Dungans, 1.1% Uyghur, 1.1% Tajik and 2.9% others. In terms of religion, 80% of the population is Moslem, 17% Christian Orthodox and 3.0% others.
