Micronesia is an island nation in the western Pacific Ocean. It nearest neighbours are Guam to the north, Palau to the west, Papua New Guinea to the south and the Marshall Islands to the east. Micronesia consists of 607 islands, grouped into four states or island groups, aligned east-west along the equator. The states are named Yap, Chuuk (previously called Truk), Pohnpei (previously called Ponape) and Kosrae (previously called Kusaie).
The islands of Micronesia vary from high mountainous islands of volcanic origin to low coral atolls. The volcanic islands are generally covered in tropical forest.
Micronesia has a total land area of 702 sq km (271 sq miles) and had a population of 106,100 in 2013. The main ethnic groups are Micronesian 88.9%, Asian 1.8%, Polynesian 1.5%, others 7.8%. The capital city, Palikir is on Pohnpei island.
