The Country
Geography
Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is bordered by China to the north, and India to the south, east and west.
The northern part of Nepal is extremely mountainous, with mountains from the Himalayas range that include 8 of the 10 highest peaks in the world – the highest being Mount Everest at 8,848 m (29,029 ft). To the south of the mountains lies a hilly region, with alternating river valleys and steep hills that would be counted as mountains in another country. Along the border with India are the southern lowland plains, or Terai, fed by rivers originating in the mountains. The land area is 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 square miles).
The country has a population of 26.5 million (2011 figures). The population is made up of 40% Khas, 40% Mongoloid, 10% Khas-Mongoloid mix, 10% immigrants (Indian, Tibetan etc). In terms of religion, 80.6% of the population is Hindu, 10.7% Bhuddist, 4.2% Moslem, 3.6% Kirant and 0.9% other. The capital is Kathmandu.
