Papua New Guinea is a country in the south west Pacific Ocean that occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea. It has a land border with Indonesia to the west, and maritime borders with Australia to the south, New Caledonia to the south east, the Solomon Islands to the east, and Micronesia to the north.
As well as the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, Papua New Guinea also includes hundreds of neighbouring islands, including Bougainville in the Solomons Group, New Britain, New Ireland and the Admiralty Islands. New Guinea is the world’s second largest island after Greenland. A spine of mountains, the New Guinea Highlands runs the length of the island. The highest peak, Mount Wilhelm reaches 4,509 m (14,793 ft). The land is mostly covered with tropical rain forest. Major rivers descent from the mountains to flat fertile plains which also have large areas of wetland.
Papua New Guinea has a total land area of 462,840 sq km (178,703 sq miles) and had a population of 7.06 million in 2011. The main ethnic groups are Papuans 84.0%, Melanesians 15.0%, Negritos, Micronesians and Polynesians 1.0%. The capital city is Port Moresby.
