Geography

Saint Kitts and Nevis is an island nation in eastern region of the Caribbean Sea. Its nearest neighbours are St Barthelemy, St Martin and Anguilla to the north, Antigua and Barbuda to the east, and Montserrat to the south. Saint Kitts and Nevis consists of two main islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, of which the largest is Saint Kitts (also known as Saint Christopher). The two islands are only 3 km (2 miles) apart.

The islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis are volcanic in origin with high central peaks covered in tropical rain forest. Numerous rivers descend from the mountains. The soil is very fertile.

Saint Kitts and Nevis has a total land area of 261 sq km (104 sq miles) and had a population of 51,300 in 2005. The main ethnic groups are Black 90.4%, Mulatto 5%, East Indian 5%, White 1% and others 0.6%. The capital city, Basseterre is on the island of Saint Kitts.
