Geography

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is an island nation in the southeastern region of the Caribbean Sea. Its nearest neighbours are Saint Lucia to the north, Grenada to the south and Barbados to the east. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines consists of the main island of Saint Vincent and about 24 much smaller islands with comprise the northern two-thirds of the Grenadines island chain.

The island of Saint Vincent itself is volcanic in origin, and therefore very mountainous, with active volcano La Soufrière reaching 1,234 m (4049 ft). There are several rivers flowing from the mountains. The mountain sides are covered in tropical rain forest. The smaller islands of the Grenadines are much lower lying and often feature coral reefs.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines has a total land area of 389 sq km (150 sq miles) and had a population of 120,000 in 2008. The main ethnic groups are Black 66%, Mixed race 19%, East Indian 6%, European 4%, Carib 2% and others 3%. The capital city, Kingstown is on the island of Saint Vincent.
