Sharjah is one of the emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates. It is located in the north of the country, in between Dubai and Umm al Quwain. Sharjah also owns three enclaves on the east coast, on the Gulf of Oman, one of which is a major port.
The emirate has a land area of 2,590 sq km (1,000 sq miles), making it the third largest emirate. The population was 890,700 in 2008. The city itself lies on the Persian Gulf coast.
