Geography
Located in Southeast Asia on the Indochinese Peninsula, South Vietnam comprised the southern half of the former French colony of Viet Nam. It was bordered by North Vietnam to the north, Laos to the west, Cambodia to the south west and the South China Sea to the east.
The terrain in South Vietnam could be divided into three areas – the costal lowlands, the central highlands and the Mekong River delta. A narrow coastal strip ran from Da Nang down to Nha Trang and was relatively highly populated. Further inland the Annamite Mountains ran into Laos and created the Central Highlands, which were mostly inhabited by ethnic minorities. The lower one third of South Vietnam, including the Mekong River System, was a low and marshy flat land, while further north and east, upland forests as well as rugged terrain dominated. The fertile Mekong region was extremely good for rice growing.
South Vietnam had a total land area of 173,809 sq km (67,108 sq miles) and had a population of 12.0 million in 1955, increasing to 19.58 million in 1974. The main ethnic groups were Kinh 90%, Hoa Chinese 6%, Montagnard 2%, Cambodian 1% and Eurasians & others 1%. The capital city was Saigon.
