South Yemen was a country in Western Asia, on the Arabian Peninsula. It was bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, Oman to the east, the Gulf of Aden to the south and North Yemen to the west.
The country comprised the eastern portion of present-day Yemen. The main geographical feature of the country was the Rub al Khali desert, which covered the northern half of the country and was almost uninhabited. The total land area was 360,133 sq km (139,048 sq miles).
The Population of 2.56 million (1990 figure) comprised 93% Arab, with 7% other ethnic groups (mainly Somali and black). In terms of religion, 54% were Sunni Moslem, 45% Shia Moslem and 1% other. The capital city was Aden.
