Turkmenistan is a county in Central Asia. The country has borders with Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north east and east, Afghanistan to the south, Iran to the south west and the Caspian Sea to the west.
Over 80% of Turkmenistan is covered by the Karakum Desert, which dominstes the centre of the country. The Kopet Dagh mountain range along the border with Iran reaches up to 2,940 m (9,646 ft) and continues to the Caspian Sea as the Great Balkhan Range. In the far south east corner, the Koytendag Mountains along the border with Uzbekistan have the highest point in Turkmenistan at Mount Ayrybaba, 3,139 m (10,299 ft) high. The land area is 491,210 square kilometres (188,456 square miles).
The country has a population of 5.13 million (2012 figures). The population is made up of 76.7% Turkmens, 9.2% Uzbeks, 6.7% Russians, 2% Kazakhs and 5.4% others. In terms of religion, 89% of the population is Moslem, 9% Orthodox Christian and 2% other. The capital is Ashgabat.
