The Country
Geography
Uzbekistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. It has borders with Kazakhstan to the north and north west, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to the east, Afghanistan to the south and Turkmenistan to the south west.
Some 80% of the terrain of Uzbekistan is made up of flat desert, with few lakes and rivers. A mountainous region in the south east rises to 4,500 m (14,800 ft). This area is prone to serious earthquakes. The most fertile part of the country is around Namangan, east of Tashkent, where mountain rivers provide good irrigation. The land area is 447,400 square kilometres (172,742 square miles).
The country has a population of 29.56 million (2012 figures). The population is made up of 80% Uzbeks, 5.5% Russians, 5% Tajiks, 3% Kazakhs, 2.5% Karakalpaks 1.5% Tartars and 2.5% others. In terms of religion, 90% of the population is Moslem, 5% Orthodox Christian and 5% other. The capital is Tashkent.
