The Country

Geography

The country of Yemen is located in the southwestern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It was established in 1990 by the unification of North Yemen and South Yemen. It is bordered by Oman to the east, Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west and the Gulf of Aden to the south. A number of islands in the Red Sea below to Yemen, as well as Socotra off the coast of Oman.

The territory of Yemen can be divided in four main regions. The coastal plains along the Red Sea coast are very arid and flat. Further inland lies the western highlands, which receives high levels of rainfall. Terracing of the land here allows a significant amount of cultivation to take place. The highest mountain in the Arabian Peninsula, Jabal an Nabi Shuayb, is found here and reaches 3,666 m (12,028 ft). To the east lies the central highlands, an extensive plateau more than 2,000 m (6,562 ft) high. This area still receives enough rainfall to allow extensive farming to take place. The capital city, Sana’a is located here. To the north along the border with Saudi Arabia lies the Rub al Khali desert, which is almost uninhabited. The total land area is 527,829 sq km (203,796 sq miles).

Yemen has a population of 23.8 million (2011 figures). The main ethnic groups are Arab 92.8%, Somali 3.7%, black 1.1%, Indo-Pakistani 1% and other 1.4%. In terms of religion, 54% are Sunni Moslem, 45% Shia Moslem and 1% other.
