The Country
Geography
Sweden is located on the Scandinavian peninsula in northern Europe. It is bordered by Norway to the west, Finland to the north east and the Gulf of Bothnia and Baltic Sea to the east and south.
The country is densely forested and features numerous lakes. The north of Sweden falls within the Arctic Circle, while the south of the country is fertile and widely cultivated. The Scandes mountain range occupies the western border region with Norway, with the highest peak reaching 2111 m (6926 ft). The total land area is 411,620 sq km (158,926 sq miles).
The Population of 8.9 million (2000 figure) comprises 91% of Swedish origin, 3% Finnish & Lapp and 6% other European ethnic groups. Some 89% of the people are Evangelical Lutheran, 2% Roman Catholic, 1% other Protestant, 1% Russian Orthodox, 1% Muslim and 6% other faiths. The capital city is Stockholm.
