The Country
Geography
Turkey is located mainly in west Asia, with a further region called Eastern Thrace in Europe. It’s land borders are with Bulgaria and Greece in the north west; Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran to the east and Iraq and Syria to the south east. The northern coast borders the Black Sea, the east coast the Aegean and the south west coast the Mediterranean. Turkey’s position straddling the sealane between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and bridging the divide between Europe and Asia, has helped shape much of it’s history.
The Asiatic part of Turkey, called Anatolia is shaped like a vast elongated saucer – with a high rim of mountains and a flat central plateau. The Pontus Mountains to the north, and the Taurus Mountains to the south, converge eastwards in a substantial range along the border with Armenia, where Mount Ararat reaches 5,165 m (16,946 ft). The coastal lowlands to the north, west and south are fertile and home to the majority of the population. The total land area is 769,630 sq km (297,154 sq miles).
The Population of 63.8 million (2000 figure) comprises 70% of Turkish origin, 20% Kurdish, 2% Arab and 8% other ethnic groups. Some 99% of the people are Muslim (mainly Sunni) and 1% other faiths. The capital city is Ankara.
