Subtitled ‘Revue de L’Aviation Francaise’. ICARE Magazine was founded in 1957 by Captain Pierre Chanoine, then President of Union of French Airline Pilots (SNPL). ICARE is put together by a team of pilots (on active duty or retired) on a completely volunteer basis who spend their time collecting stories and photos for the magazine. Occassionally, aviation specialists from around the world join the editing team. Since 1965, when Captain Jean Lasserre became editor, ICARE has devoted its quarterly issues primarily to the History of Aviation, with articles written by the contributors. However, the magazine is also a vehicle of communication for the French Airline pilots Union.

Each issue is usually dedicated to the in-depth coverage of a single topic – often as part of a themed series. The themes concentrate on French aviation history and famous aviators. Past topics have included the Battle of France, the Red Baron, the Free French Air Force, and Air France. The magazine is printed in a larger than A4 page format, with 120-160 pages in each. Some issues have up to 200 pages or more. Illustrated with many very rare b+w photos, usually printed quite large on the page.
