Description
‘Vartovi neba’ translates as Guardians of the Sky or Sentry of the Sky or sometimes Patriotic Sky. It was the official newspaper of the Ukrainian Air Defence Force, which at the time was a separate organisation from the Air Force. In 2004 the Air Defence Force was merged into the Air Force, and the need for a separate newspaper ceased to exist. It main function was to keep service personnel informed about news and activities within the organisation, although it also included articles on Ukrainian history and other topics of military interest. Unlike other contemporary publications, it did not indulge in Soviet-style propaganda on the virtues of the service, although it did place an emphasis on the Ukrainianisation of a previously Russian dominated force. Later issues were more reflective of a professional force and included interesting technical articles.
