Malta


Introduction

This is a survey of Maltese aviation, defence and aircraft scale modelling magazines. All magazines are English text only, unless otherwise stated.

For other nations, check our country by country listing. An alphabetical index of titles is also available, as is a list of useful magazine shops which deal with new or secondhand magazines.

'Air Forces International'
[Modelaid International Publications, ISSN ? ]

First published in January 1988. Monthly military aviation magazine with a strong scale modelling emphasis. A4 size, 28 pages each, b+w and colour photos, scale drawings, many tone profile drawings, colour profiles etc. Typical contents: kit and decal reviews, photo feature, modern combat aircraft type in close-up with scale drawings, world air forces news, aircraft of the fifties: scale drawings, WW2 aircraft modelling manual - scale drawings and markings details, air force serials listing, museum news. Replaced by Sky Warriors in 1991. The Managing Editor was Micheal Bonello, with Art Editor Richard J Caruana, who was also the publisher.

'Airlines International'
[Modelaid International Publications, ISSN ? ]

First published January 1988. Civil airliner magazine with a strong emphasis on scale modelling. Initially intended to be monthly, but only managed to reach Quarterly status. A4 size, 28 pages, many photos and scale drawings. Featured articles on historical and modern civil aviation subjects with a Mediterranean bias, including airline markings, airliners, airline news etc. Not thought to have survived beyond Issue 2. Published by Richard J Caruana.

'Modelaid International'
[Modelaid International Publications, ISSN ? ]

Scale plastic modelling magazine, with the majority of it's contents devoted to aircraft markings and close-up details. A4 size, many b+w photos and scale drawings. Launched in 1984 as a quarterly, became bi-monthly in 1985 and had become monthly by 1987, when it split into two titles: Air Forces International and Airlines International (see above). The Publisher and major contributor was Richard J Caruana.

'Sky Warriors'
[Modelaid International Publications, ISSN 0961-5377]

A re-vamped version of Air Forces International with improved quality printing and more colour illustrations. Launched in February 1991, but didn't survive very long. Covered vintage and modern military aviation topics. A4 size, 64 pages, many b+w and colour photos and scale line drawings. Published by Richard J Caruana.

'Take-Off'
[Malta Aviation Society, ISSN ? ]

Bi-monthly magazine for members of the Malta Aviation Society. Launched in 1974. A magazine for aviation enthusiasts and modellers, featuring the Malta aviation scene, Luqa movements, photo page, scale drawings, kit coversions etc. MAS also periodically publishes 'Luqa Airport Movements' for it's members. Note: The July-September date on this cover scan seems to indicate that Take-Off is now published quarterly.
