'Aero Africa'

Monthly publication covering all aspects of African aviation. Published as a 48 page A4-sized magazine in full colour. It was the second largest circulating magazine in Southern Africa, until it closed down in late 2003.

'African Air Review'
[Aviation Society of Africa, ISSN ? ]
Subscription only. Published bi-monthly from March 1980. Replaced ASA Newsletter. 16 pages per issue, with 7 photos in each. Featured historical and current articles on African aviation and the latest aviation news - especially Southern Africa, airline news, African civil register news, and military news, together with articles on local air forces and airlines in detail. In 1984 the publishing frequency became quarterly, and in 1985 a (quarterly?) 4-12 page Update newsletter was introduced, concentrating on news and events. In 1986 the feature articles were consolidated into a new magazine, 'Air Africana' (see below), while AAR continued as a news magazine with reduced page count (4-8 pages per issue). Ceased publication in the 1990s in favour of the current 'minimalist' ASA website. There is no publication information on the website.

'African Pilot'
[Wavelengths 10 (Pty) Ltd, ISSN ? ]
Subtitled 'Serious About Flying'. Aimed at the pilot and all aviation enthusiasts, 'African Pilot' has quickly become Southern Africa's leading aviation magazine, both in terms of editorial quality and also in size of circulation. Each issue features informative articles relating to aviation in Southern Africa as well as spectacular aviation photography by the leading South African aviation photographers.
An A4 size monthly magazine printed in full colour. Eight issues were published in the first year, starting with the December 2001/January 2002 issue. From the February 2002 issue the magazine has appeared monthly. Early issues appeared with 68-72 pages each, later increasing to 76 pages in July 2003 and then 104 pages from May 2004. A further increase in page numbers and print quality is planned for 2005.

'Air Africana'

Subscription only. Published quarterly (?) from March 1986. 24 pages per issue, with photos in each. Featured historical and current articles on African aviation, with an emphasis on the South African Air Force. Topics covered included SAAF units and aircraft, the SAAF Museum, other local air forces and airlines.

Subscription only monthly news and historical magazine. Published between the mid 1970s and 1980. 20 pages each, illustrated with photos. Included news, airliner news, register review and accident reports. Also included a survey of aviation in an African country in each issue. Replaced by African Air Review, see above.

The Aero Club of South Africa is the umbrella organisation for all the Private and Sport Flying organisations in South Africa. It used to publish a monthly (11/per year) magazine in English, but this appears to have ceased publication. No reference to it appears on the official ACSA website.

Monthly magazine containing almost 100 per cent aviation news, in a newspaper style layout, with many short pieces. 40 pages each issue, b+w photos are mainly of people. Mostly private and commercial news items with about one page of military news. Taken over by 'World AirNews' in the 1970s.
