'The Aeroplane Spotter'
[Temple Press Ltd, no ISSN]

First issue dated 2 January 1941, and ceased publication with the 10 July 1948 edition after 217 issues in 9 volumes. Initially published weekly, but became fortnightly during late 1941, circa issue 50, due to newsprint shortages. Launched with official support just after the end of the London Blitz, this magazine quickly became the focus for all the aircraft enthusiasts in the UK. It's official function was to help improve the standard of aircraft recognition among civilian air defence volunteers, but it effectively launched the hobby of 'spotting'.

With 12 pages in each issue, it contained features, photos and silhouettes of the major aircraft types (both friend and foe), and news of the latest types. It was also the first magazine to cover military serial number and civil registration changes. Naturally, some information was ommitted for security reasons, but generally this magazine was the best informed and best written of the war years. After the demise of the magazine, many 'spotters' set up their own organisations to carry on their interest - one of which was Air-Britain. As this title was printed on ordinary newsprint paper, surviving copies experience a progressive discolouration of the pages and the edges often become browned.

'The Royal Air Force News'
[Ministry of Defence, ISSN 0035-8610]

First published in 1961, this is the official newspaper of the Royal Air Force. It carries the latest operational news, features on topical issues and life in the Service, developments in military aviation and air power, and reviews of significant events and changing times during the history of the RAF - as well as reports on the diverse activities of people throughout the extended RAF family, be they in uniform, the Reserves, the Air Training Corps or one of the many RAF associations. The newspaper is on sale every fortnight through newsagents or is available on annual subscription.
Recent issues are printed on glossy paper in tabloid format, with at least 24 pages in each issue and illustrated by many b+w and colour photographs. In the late 1990s the masthead title was shortened to 'RAF News'. Also reported with the ISSN: 0035-8614.

'Aviation News'
[Alan W. Hall Publications Ltd, ISSN 0956-1410]

First issue dated 26 May-8 June 1972. 'Aviation News' started off as an 8-12 page tabloid newspaper format publication, with a mixture of news, historical and modern feature articles and spotting information. A large scale drawing occupied the centrespread of each issue. Illustrations were entirely in black and white, (and somewhat murky). Lower than expected sales resulted in a decline in paper and printing quality.

From June 1983 it became an A4 size magazine, with improved printing quality and colour covers. The editorial content remained unchanged, although colour photos were introduced later. In 1995 it was taken over by HPC Publishing, (who by then owned 'Air Pictorial'), and reformatted as a pure news and current affairs magazine - the historical articles being transferred to 'Air Pictorial'. This approach was evidently a failure, as in 1996 'Aviation News' was closed down and amalgamated into 'Air Pictorial'. In 2002 'Air Pictorial' was renamed 'Aviation News'.
