11 November 1991    First Border Guard units sworn in.
1 February 1992    Border Guard Brigade created.
23 November 1995    Border Guard Brigade becomes Border Guarding Forces within the National Armed Forces.
7 January 1997    BGF moved from Ministry of Defence to Ministry of the Interior.
14 February 1997    Border Guarding Forces renamed Border Guard of the Ministry of the Interior.
1 May 1998    Border Guard renamed State Border Guard.
2002    State Border Guard Aviation Service established.

Current Status

Latvian Border Guard helicopters are used primarily for border surveillance and law enforcement missions.

Future Plans

Funds were allocated in late 2012 for the purchase of two Agusta-Bell AB206B helicopters from the Finnish Border Guard.
