Narrative Summary
The Ambulance Service of New South Wales was first established in 1895, under the title Civil Ambulance and Transport Brigade. It gained its present title in 1977. A fixed-wing air ambulance service was launched in 1967, and soon expanded to four aircraft. A helicopter EMS service was introduced circa 1992, for the greater Sydney area. Other regions of NSW are covered by the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter and by Westpac Life Saver Rescue helicopters, which operate under contract to the NSW Health service.
