Description

2011 is the 40th Anniversary of the Air Tattoo, and it has come a long way since the first event at North Weald in 1971. One of the key themes this year will be a celebration of the aircraft and people that have made RIAT so unique over the years. It is hoped that many of the air arms that have participated in previous shows will be able this send aircraft for this years celebration.

Another key theme is Strike, Attack and Reconnaissance – which covers a range of airborne capabilities from UAV, to fast jets and attack helicopters. Also attending will be aircraft celebrating the 50th anniversary of the NATO Tiger Association. We can expect some impressive colour schemes featuring tiger-stripes.

The flying display will feature a number of aerobatic teams, including the Breitling Jet Team with their L39s, and the Hunters of Team Viper, but the highlight will be the Italians of the Frecce Tricolori – widely regarded as the world’s best formation display team.

Other highlights of the flying display are expected to include a formation of two F-16s and two Vampires from the Royal Norwegian Air Force, an A-10C Thunderbolt II from the USAF, a Turkish F-16, the RNHF Swordfish, and a return visit from the Airbus A400M airlifter.

A large turnout from the USAF and US Navy is expected, but nearly all of these aircraft will go to the static park. Following the distinctly lacklustre static display of recent years, it is hoped that the colourful Tiger Meet aircraft and 40th anniversary attendees will produce a static line-up to remember.

Also expected to appear will be a number of other classic jets, civilian display acts and modern military aircraft.
