Azerbaijan is a country located in the Caucasus region of Eurasia, where Western Asia and Eastern Europe meet. The country has borders with Russia to the north, the Caspian sea to the east, Iran to the south, Armenia to the west and Georgia to the north west. Azerbaijan also has territorial jurisdiction over the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave which is located inside Armenia.
The terrain of Azerbaijan can be divided into three main areas. The north of the country is characterised by the continuation of the Greater Caucasus mountains, which run to the coast, while in the west the border with Armenia is defined by the Lesser Caucasus mountains. Altogether, mountains cover about 40% of the country. The centre of the country is an extensive broad flatland with several lakes fed by rivers flowing down from the mountains. The land area is 86,600 square kilometres (33,436 square miles).
The country has a population of 9.36 million (2013 figures). The population is made up of 91.6% Azerbaijani, 2.02% Lezgian, 1.35% Armenian, 1.34% Russian, 1.26% Talysh and 2.43% others. In terms of religion, 82% of the population is Shia Moslem, 14.5% Sunni Moslem, 3.1% Christian and 0.5% others. The capital is Baku.
