The Country

Bhutan is a landlocked country in South Asia. It is bordered by India to the south, east and west, and China to the north.

Bhutan is a mountainous country, crisscrossed by steep river valleys. The north of the country is covered by an arc of the Himalayan mountain range, with alpine pasture in intervening valleys. These mountains can range up to 7,570 m (24,840 ft) high. The central region is characterised by a lower range of mountains cut by deep river valleys. These mountains are covered by forests. Most of the population lives in this region. In the south, a lower range of mountains, covered by subtropical forests, slope down to meet the Duars plain of northern India. The land area is 38,394 square kilometres (14,824 square miles).

The country has a population of 742,700 (2012 figures). The population is made up of 50% Ngalops (Northern Bhutanese), 35% Lhotshampa (ethnic Nepalese) and 15% indigenous tribes. In terms of religion, 76% of the population is Buddhist, 23% Hindu and 1% other. The capital is Thimphu.
