The Policija Republike Bosne i Hercegovine was first formed in April 1992, from Yugoslav Police units on Bosnian territory. Two Yugoslav Bell helicopters in Bosnia defected to Serbia around the same time, leaving the service with no aviation unit. In 1996 the Federal Ministry of Interior (FMUP) was created to administer police operations in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina area. Policing in the Republika Srpska came under the Ministry of Interior of Republika Srpska (MUP RS), which had already been established in 1992.
In 2002 a Bell 206 JetRanger was obtained from the USA to restart the Police Aviation Unit.
