Cessna L-19 Bird Dog

in North Korean Air Force service

History

One Cessna L-19A Bird Dog ended up in North Korean hands during the Korean War. The aircraft was flown north by South Korean Army Lieutenant Kug Yong Am, who was undergoing flight training courtesy of the US Army at Kwangju, when, on December 2, 1952, he defected to North Korea during a solo training flight, landing at Pyongyang. Apparently, the DPRKAF subsequently used the Bird Dog for a number of nuisance flights against UN forces. Reportedly this Bird Dog was painted in Turkish colours. Incidentally, Kug Yong Am briefly became the official pilot of North Korean leader Nam Il, but was assassinated within three weeks of his defection.
