History

One Dornier Do 228-212 delivered in 1992. Replaced by two new Do 228-212s in late 2007. Compared to the first aircraft, these last two aircraft were fitted with a glass cockpit, new avionics, upgraded radar, infra-red cameras and a sonar buoy dispenser.

History

Three Dornier-built Do 228-101s were initially obtained, the first two being handed over in Germany on 7 July 1986 and arriving in India on 18 July. An order for eighteen more licence-built Do 228-101s was placed with HAL, for delivery mid 1988-1999. (By March 1997 The ICG had received 14 Do 228-101 from HAL). In 1999 an order was placed for an additional 7 aircraft, to be delivered 2001-203. An planned eventual total of 36 aircraft has been officially approved. The Do 228 is used for maritime patrol, fisheries protection, long-range search & rescue and anti-smuggling missions. The aircraft are fitted with a MEL Super Marec search radar, IR/UV linescan, Litton Omega navigation system, a powerful searchlight and weapons hard points.
