What’s Here

Located in a Victorian Casemate Fortress dating from the 1860s is a varied collection of artefacts recovered from aviation archaeology digs in the Essex area. The nose section of a former Egyptian Air Force MiG-21UM is also on show here.

North Weald Airfield Museum

What’s Here

Located in a building near the main gate of the former Battle of Britain fighter airfield is this museum. Four rooms of material are devoted to the history of the aerodrome, whose aircraft defended London between 1916 and 1958. Numerous exhibits portray the units and personnel stationed here. The Hurricane FSM is actually located at the airfield main entrance.

Directions

At North Weald, off the A414, from Junction 7 of the M11, east of Harlow. Access to Hurricane Way is from North Weald village and NOT via the airfield entrance.

Opening Hours:

Open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays 12.00 noon to 5.00 pm (last entry 4.00 pm), early April until the end of November.

East Essex Aviation Museum

What’s Here

The museum display is housed in a Martello tower on the coast. Exhibits include aviation archeology finds, memorabilia and the substantial wreckage of two wartime P-51 fighters. They also have several displays upstairs of uniforms, guns etc which are well worth a look.

Directions

Inside Orchards Holiday Camp, Point Clear, Clacton-on-Sea, Essex. From Clacton-on-Sea, go through St. Osyth towards Point Clear. The Martello Tower is at the far end of the holiday village.

Visiting

Opening Hours:

Open Monday 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm and Sunday 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, April to October; also Wednesdays 10.00 am to 2.00 pm, June to September.

Admission:

Free, but donations are welcome.

Amenities:

The tower is located on a caravan site, so there are toilets, a cafe, and a pub only a few yards away.
