Cyprus Department of Forests

Operator Profile

History

Narrative Summary

The Department of Forests is one of the oldest government departments in Cyprus, being established in 1879 in the colonial era. After independence in 1960, Greek Cypriots assumed control of the Department. Circa 1975 the Department began using aircraft for spraying and fire spotting. The aircraft were not equipped for actual firefighting duties. In 2009 orders were placed for a new generation of modern aircraft to perform firefighting duties. It is not clear if any aircraft were operated between 2007 and 2009. For additional firefighting support, the Department also places short-term contracts for other aircraft and helicopters each fire season.
