Agrupación Aéreo Fluvial

of the Paraguayan National Police

History

The Agrupación Aéreo Fluvial (River Air Group) is a specialised unit within the Agrupación Especializada (Special Group) of the PNP. The unit uses boats to patrol the rivers and helicopters to provide police air support. The unit was first established on 26 August 2010.

History

Narrative Summary

The first Paraguayan Police force was established in 1843. In 1992 a new constitution came into effect, which re-organised policing under the newly created Policia Nacional Paraguaya (PNP). The PNP come under the Ministry of the Interior. In 1992 a Mil Mi-8 was obtained on lease to evaluate helicopter operations. It subsequently crashed in 1994. In 2010 the Agrupación Especializada (Special Group) established a new aviation unit, the ‘Agrupación Aéreo Fluvial’ (River Air Group), to operate helicopters in support of policing operations.

Current Status

The PNP helicopters are used primarily for patrol and transport.

No further aquisitions are planned.

Markings

National Insignia

A triangular version of the national flag is carried on the fuselage sides and the national colours are carried as horizontal stripes on the tail fin. The PNP shield insignia is displayed on the forward fuselage. All aircraft carry the service title POLICIA NACIONAL on the fuselage.

Aircraft Serial Numbers

All PNP helicopters carry military-style serials in the A-01 to A-15 range, except for the Mi-8 which – appears to have been un-serialled.

Three R44 Series II ordered new via a Spanish contractor and delivered from 25 April 2010. One attrition replacement supplied in June 2011, but not used for long.

One Mi-8T was obtained on lease in May 1992. Operated by the Agrupación Aeropolicial. It was subsequently written off in an accident while in service.
