Aircam/Airwar

The Aircam/Airwar series of books covered the combat operations of the world’s major air forces during WW1 and WW2. Each title focused on a specific role – fighter, bomber, ground attack etc – within a defined theatre of operations. The narrative text provided an outline history of the campaigns fought by these units, describng the men, the missions, the machines and the markings carried. Well illustrated with rare b+w photos, each book also included 6 pages of colour artwork illustrating the aircraft, unit insignia, vehicles and aircrew uniforms of the featured units. (Initially called ‘Aircam/Airwar’, to link with a previous Osprey series, the series title became ‘Osprey/Airwar’ from volume 13).

In 2002 all of these titles were reprinted as facsimile editions to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of their first publication.

Airliner Tech

Airliner Tech is a series of books designed for the layman, looking at various commercial airliners from a technical point of view. Special emphasis is placed on the design and performance aspects of the aircraft and detailed technical specifications are included. Relatively little space is devoted to in-service use of the subject aircraft. However, much use is made of excerpts from official technical manuals for the aircraft.

The text is written in a clear and informative manner. The history of the aircraft is described with a strong emphasis on the technical aspects. Modifications, variants and experimental prototypes are well covered. Aircraft systems, the cockpit or crew positions, the undercarriage, engines etc. are fully described and illustrated.

Each book is generously illustrated with black and white photographs and line drawings of each variant. Also included are cutaways, exploded views and technical-manual drawings. The photographs are not just of in-service aircraft, but also include aircraft on the production line, and during depot-level repair, revealing the internal structure of the aircraft.

Black Cross

The Black Cross series appears to be aimed at producing a Luftwaffe equivalent to Midland Publishing’s highly successful Red Star series. Each title focuses on an important and technically interesting German aircraft type, and is meticulously researched and highly illustrated.

The core of each book comprises a very comprehensive design and development history of the type, covering each variant and sub-variant. Further chapters look at the structure and equipment of the aircraft in detail, a brief look at the type in combat service and a short modelling section, with notes on available model kits and advice for modellers. Each book includes numerous b+w photographs, line drawings, detailed sketches and some colour artwork.

It should be noted that the Black Cross series is a direct translation of the German series “Vom Original zum Modell”, published by Bernard & Graefe Verlag. The German version already has 11 titles, but production of the UK version seems to have ceased after only 5 volumes. The German cover pictures are the same as their English translations.

At War

The At War series was a number of hardback books looking at the wartime careers of classic military aircraft, or in some cases military organisation. Each book comprises a collection of first-hand accounts by the men who flew and serviced the aircraft, illustrated by numerous b+w photographs to recreate the atmosphere of the time. The text and photographs combine to trace the history of the type during its wartime service in all the major theatres of war. Some of the later titles go further and present a pictorial history of the entire career of the subject aircraft, with a reduced emphasis on first hand accounts.

Famous Aircraft Series

The Famous Aircraft Series series was launched by Len Morgan, an acclaimed pilot and aviation writer of the 1960s, who later invited other authors to contribute titles. Rather than concentrating on the technical details, these booklets were intended to give the reader an impression of what it was like to fly each aircraft type. When originally published, each title included a reproduction of the pilot’s manual, but later reprints left this out. Illustrated with a selection of very high quality b+w photos and a 3-view scale drawing.

The original publisher was Len Morgan, but circa 1965 the publishing rights were obtained by Arco Publishing who reprinted all the current issues. Arco was taken over by Aero Publishers in the 1970s, who were then brought by TAB Books. Both these companies continued issuing reprints.

4+ Series

The 4+ series of aircraft titles is aimed at aviation enthusiasts and plastic modellers, bringing together a selection of quality printed photographs and details. Each monograph is a comprehensive and accurate account of a particular aeroplane and the titles range from World War I to the post war period, mainly including RAF/FAA aircraft but also featuring Soviet-designed machines.

Each title includes a type history and technical description, production overview, armament & equipment description, camouflage details, colour and black & white photos (both period pictures and shots of current preserved machines), colour or tone camouflage profile drawings, a pull-out colour poster, cockpit interior drawings, and sheets of 1/72 or 1/48 scale plans (made using the original factory drawings and measurement of actual aircraft).
