V.E.G – Vertically Elevated Generation

Aviation-related Magazines Guide

Description

‘V.E.G – Vertically Elevated Generation’ was a general magazine covering a wide range of military and technical subjects. Available in English and Afrikaans (as ‘V.E.G – Vertikale Elevasie Generasie’) editions, it was regarded as one of the best reference magazines available.

The feature articles covered many South African-related topics, from Armour, to SAAF, SADF, civil planes, Boer War, Uniforms, railway locomotives, the Navy and many more subjects. The illustrations were top notch, with detailed pictures, large colour drawings and scale illustrations. There were about 60 pages in each issue, with full colour illustrations on nearly every page. Unfortunately, only 8 issues were produced in total.

Aviation and Safety

Aviation-related Magazines Guide

Published 11 times a year, ‘Aviation and Safety’ claimed to be the “Cover to Cover magazine”. Aimed at student, private, charter and “wannabe” pilots, the publication was also pitched at flight instructors. The magazine covered international news and local events and contained pilot profiles and piloting features with an emphasis on safety and training. The magazine’s writing style was at times lively, although somewhat let down by poor layout and photography.

The magazine was run by a regional airline pilot, Gary Wiblin, and was based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The combined December 2010 and January 2011 issue, number 67, was 48 pages. The magazine was sold via subscription and nationwide newsagents and supermarkets. The last issue was number 69.

Global Aviator

Aviation-related Magazines Guide

Published 11 times a year, ‘Global Aviator’ is Africa’s latest aviation publication. Run by the successful ex-owner of ‘SA Flyer’ magazine, ‘Global Aviator’ is pitched at the “industry”, airline and military reader and advertiser. Air Force subjects are written about extensively. Also covering some historical and private aviation topics, the magazine is nicely laid out using top quality images by well-known photographer, Frans Dely, who is also a business partner.

Launched in 2009, in glossy printed form, the magazine is sold via high street bookstores in South Africa and has become extremely successful worldwide as an electronic download.

Wings Over Africa

Aviation-related Magazines Guide

‘Wings Over Africa’ was subtitled The Aviation News Magazine of Africa. It was a monthly magazine containing almost 100 per cent aviation news, in a newspaper style layout, with many short pieces. Each issue comprised 40 pages, with many b+w photos which mainly featured people. The news coverage was mostly private and commercial news items, with about one page of military news.

The magazine was first published by the Governing Committee in March 1941 under the title ‘Wings Over Africa: The Air Force War Magazine’. The circumstances indicate that the magazine was launched to inform the public about the course of World War 2 in Africa, and in particular the involvement of the SAAF in its campaigns.

After the war, it became The Air and Travel Magazine and continued reporting aviation news in southern Africa. It survived until the late 1980s, when it was taken over by ‘World Airnews’.
