Tajikistan is a landlocked country in Central Asia. The country has borders with China to the east, Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west and Kyrgyzstan to the north.
The terrain of Tajikistan is almost emtirely mountainous, with more than half of the country over 3000 m (9,800 ft) above sea level. The most densely populated areas are two wide river valleys, the Fergana Valley in the far north, surrounded on three sides by Uzbekistan, and the Vakhsh river and its tributaries in western Tajikistan. The land area is 143,100 square kilometres (55,251 square miles).
The country has a population of 8.0 million (2013 figures). The population is made up of 79.9% Tajiks, 16.5% Uzbeks, 1.1% Russians, 1.1% Kyrgyz and 2.6% others. In terms of religion, 95% of the population is Sunni Moslem, 3% Shia Moslem, 1.5% Orthodox Christian and 0.5% others. The capital is Dushanbe.
