The Country

The page refers to the area under the control of the Palestinian Authority/State of Palestine, from 1994. Aviation before this date is found under Israel.

The State of Palestine is a region recognised by the United Nations in 2012 as a ‘non-member observer state’. It is located in the Middle East within the state of Israel. It comprises the West Bank, which is a area of land along the river Jordan, and the Gaza Strip, which is located further south along the Mediterranean coast. The two territories are separated by several miles of Israeli territory. Palestine thus has borders with Israel, Jordan, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.

The West Bank is a landlocked region with a generally rugged mountainous landscape. The region around the Dead Sea has an elevation of 408 m below mean sea level. Some 27% of the land is used for pasture or agriculture. The Gaza Strip is a flat arid region, although irrigation allows about one third of the land to be used for agriculture. The total land area is 6,220 sq km (2,400 sq miles).

The population of Palestine is 4.26 million (2010 figures), which is made up of 83% Palestinian Arab and 13% Jewish settlers. In terms of religion 75% are Moslem, 17% Jewish and 8% Christian and other. The capital city is declared as Jerusalem, although administration comes from Ramallah, in the West Bank.
